*This program meets the requirements set forth in Oklahoma SB 1446/848 for pain management, opioid use or addiction education for MDs and PAs.
The post-test and evaluation must be completed if the activity is to be used for CME credit. The score required for passing 70%.
Target Audience
The educational design addresses the needs and issues of healthcare providers including physicians, nurses, physicians' assistants, healthcare administrators and practice managers.
Program Description
The opioid epidemic in America results in nearly 50,000 deaths each year and accounts for six out of every ten overdose deaths. Oklahoma ranked 9th in the nation for the number of opioid prescriptions per 100 persons, and ranked 28th in the number of opioid deaths in 2017. Because of the scope of the problem, the Oklahoma legislature has recently passed legislation to regulate the prescribing of opioids by healthcare professionals. This presentation will review data re: characteristics of claims and adverse events involving opioids and the scope of the opioid crisis. We will review the requirements set into law for prescribing opioid medication in Oklahoma.

At the conclusion of this program, the learner will:
- Recognize the impact of medication errors in professional liability claims
- Discuss examples of medication related events leading to patient harm
- Identify strategies to address medication errors
- Discuss the scope of the opioid crisis in the US and Oklahoma
- Describe interventions in healthcare that have been shown to reduce the use of opioid medications
- Discuss the current legal requirements for opioid prescribing in Oklahoma
